Hanoi announces top 10 outstanding citizens

The 14-year-old violinist is the youngest person selected to the capital’s top 10 outstanding citizens in 2016.

The ceremony to honour the winners will be held on January 20.

1. Tran Le Quang Tien


Tran Le Quang Tien, born in 2002, is studying at Vietnam National Academy of Music. He had won the first prize at last year's International Violin Competition in Kazakhstan and the Mozart Violin Competition in Thailand in 2014. He also won the Toyota scholarship in 2015.

Vietnam's leading violinist Bui Cong Duy, Tien's instructor at Vietnam National Academy of Music said Tien had just only played the violin since the age of ten. "He shows that he has an innate talent and is a brave performer. The academy will have training courses for him to enter bigger contests," Duy said.

2. Tran Xuan Bach


Bach was born in 1984 and is an associate professor in medical and lecturer at Institute for Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He is the youngest associate professor in Vietnam and has published over 100 articles, over half of which are published in reputable international magazines.

He has been given various local and international awards such as the Dan Van Ngu Awards, the Insights – Best PhD Oral Presentation Award by University of Alberta, School of Public Health in Canada and the Prevention and Clinical International Research Award by Johns Hopkins University Center for AIDS Research in 2015.

3. Phan Duc Nhat Minh


Phan Duc Nhat Minh, born in 1998, is studying at Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam National University.

Minh has won various medals at international informatics contests including a silver in 2015, a gold medal in 2016, and two Asia - Pacific Olympic Informatics gold medals in 2015 and 2016. He was given Labour Order (Third Class) in 2016 and certificate of merit by the prime minister in 2015.

4. Nguyen Van Thiet


22-year-old Nguyen Van Thiet is a student at Hanoi Vocational College of High Technology. He was given the certificates of merits by the prime minister and the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs last year. He also won a gold medal in industrial automation category at the ASEAN Skills Competition 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

5. Phan Van Hoc


Hoc was born in 1984 and is the chairman of Sohaco Group. He is also among the ten outstanding young entrepreneurs that were honoured for their successful start-up businesses. He was given certificate of merit from the chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee in 2014 and from the VCCI last year for excellent achievements in business.

6. Ta Dinh Huy


Born in 1983, Huy has created many machinery and tools to aid farmers and created jobs for dozens of people in Thuong Vuc Commune, Chuong My District. In 2014, he introduced a multi-functional machine that can plough and cultivate land, sow, weed, spray pesticide as well as water fields. He was given certificates of merits by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2016 and chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee in 2015.

7. Nguyen Nhat Quang


33-year-old Nguyen Nhat Quang is the deputy head of a drug investigation team of Hanoi police department. Last year, the team received 22 cases with 80 suspects. He was given the Third-class Feat of Arms Order and certificate or merits from Hanoi People's Committee last year.

8. Vu Thanh An


Fencer An was born in 1992. He has been praised for his hard work. An won two gold medals at the 2016 South East Asian Championship and two silver medals at 2016 Asian Championship and qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

9. Hoang Dinh Quang


Born in 1994, Quang is a valedictorian at Foreign Trade University. He won various scholarships such as the Sumitomo Scholarship in 2012, 2013 and 2015, the Lotte Scholarship in 2014. He ran a charity class in 2014 and 2015 for 200 disadvantaged pupils and a class on labour law for 100 students in 2014. He also has 100 tutorial videos on Youtube intended to help poor pupils.

10. Do Thuy Ha


Ha was born in 1981. Despite her blindness, she was selected to participate in the English Olympic Games in the north held by UNESCO and won third place. Ha runs classes to teach other blind people how to read braille and vocational training. In 2013, she was named as a role model by the Vietnam Women's Union and the capital's representative role model by Hanoi Women's Union.
