A 11th grader has won third prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2017 held in the US with the robotic arm for the disabled.

Director of Quang Tri Province's Department of Education Le Thi Huong confirmed with Dan Tri/DTiNews on May 20 that 11th grader Pham Huy won the third prize at the US Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2017.

"This is the highest award out of five prizes the Vietnam team won at the fair so I'm very happy," Huy said.

Pham Huy is a pupil at Quang Tri Town High School for the Gifted in Quang Tri province. Huy's family and teachers also shared his happiness while they watched the awards ceremony on the internet.

Huy started his research since he was in 8th grade. In the first two years, Huy searched about the algorithm and his robotic arm won first prize at the National Science & Technology Competition for Northern High School Students in the 2016-2017 school year.

Huy said many people had been left disabled following traffic accidents. That's why he wanted to created a low-cost robotic arm to help the disabled. Good robotic arms in the market are too expensive while the low-cost alternatives had proved limited.

Huy uses the movement of toes and feet to control fingers, hands and arms. The device uses sensors to send signals via electromagnetic waves to electronic circuits mounted on the robotic arm. He also uses 3D printing technology to create parts of the cover.

Le Cong Long, Huy's teacher, said Huy was a hardworking and smart pupil. When he knew about the project's purpose, he had encouraged and helped Huy.

"I hope that the adults and other educators will encourage and help kids with potential and create useful products," he said.

Huy said he would further complete the robotic arm and if it's possible, he would want to mass produce the arm for the disabled.
