The first prize in the Vietnamese Talent Awards' science and technology category was granted to Dr Tran Huu Ly from the Ministry of Defence’s Military Institute of Mechanical Engineering for his project on transforming four-wheeled armoured vehicles into ambulances for peace-keeping duties in South Sudan.

Ly said, "After winning the first prize in the Vietnamese Talent Awards, we received a lot of encouragement from our leaders so we introduced our project at the Seoul International Invention Fair. It's an honour to receive the gold medal after the project was given high regards for its commercial applicability."

Seoul International Invention Fair is one of the world's biggest invention fairs where the inventors introduce their ideas and products. This is also a chance for the attendees to get consultation about getting international patents, technology transfer and commercial opportunities for their projects.

After being given the project, Ly's team overcame all challenges to develop the project to a point of usability. Their project has helped save millions of USD for the Ministry of Defence.

Two of their challenges were time and temperature adjustment. The UN will carry out a check on the equipment soon. Moreover, the outdoor temperature in Sudan is 53-55 degrees while the regular cooling system can only bring it down by 10 degrees. It is required that the temperature must be around 25 degrees. After several experiments, they successfully overcame the challenge in time.

"We only thought of our country and people while working on the project. We submitted the projects to the awards after being encouraged by our leaders. We didn't think that we won the first prize at Vifotec 2018 Awards and Vietnamese Talent Awards," Ly said.

He went on to say that the awards are a huge honour for the institute and also a pressure to make them further improve their works.

"It's a rare award for the military and an encouragement for us to work harder on practical projects," he said.
