Vietnamese students win gold at 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad

Vietnamese students won four gold medals at the 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.


Vietnamese students win gold at 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad

This is the highest achievement by a Vietnamese team yet.

Four students in the team are Ly Hai Dang, 12th grader from Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, Nguyen Hoang Duong, 11th grader from the HUS High School for Gifted Students of the Vietnam National University, Pham Trung Quoc Anh, 12th grader from Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, and Dam Thi Minh Trang, 12th grader from Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted.

Ly Hai Dang scored 97 out of 100 points and ranked fifth out of 231 students. Nguyen Hoang Duong scored 94 points and ranked ninth, Pham Trung Quoc Anh scored 92.5 points and ranked 15th and Dam Thi Minh Trang scored 91.12 scored and ranked 22nd.

With four medals, Vietnam team ranked second behind the US team.

The 52nd International Chemistry Olympiad was held in Turkey amid Covid-19 outbreak so all students had to take remote access exams. Vietnam also participated and joined the network at the Hanoi National University of Education under a strict monitoring system of the organising board.

This year, a total of 60 countries participated in the contest. 20 fewer team due to the pandemic. Last year, Vietnam won two gold medals and two silver medals. Tran Ba Tan ranked fourth and was named as the most outstanding student with a perfect score.
