Hanoi- New Year Concert “VConcert 2018”

Hanoi Opera House, 1 Trang Tien Street
Featuring artists from the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and leading artists in the field of classical music in Vietnam, such as sopranos Tran Trang and Dinh Trang, and tenor Dang Duong. Conductor Honna Tetsuji – who has been working in the field for the last decade – and Japanese violinist Matsuda Lina will also take part in the concert.
Classical music lovers will get to enjoy well-known instrumental Vietnamese music pieces by Do Kien Cuong, Nguyen Dinh Long, Do Hong Quan, Dang Huu Phuc and by foreign composers, such as J. Offenbach, J.Strauss II, G. Rossini, J. Brahms, L.V. Beethoven, V.A.Mozart.

HCMC-Crossing Beyond - an evening of World Music

The Old Compass Cafe and Bar, 3rd Floor, Apt 11, 63 Pasteur St, District 1
A night of world music with Guihangtar. Traditional Asian idioms weaved with Western styles, exploring the technical and expressive dimensions of the guitar, enhanced with percussion instruments from various parts of the world.
Guihangtar is an international duo featuring guitarist Le-Tuyen Nguyen (Teaching Fellow, Australian National University School of Music) and percussionist Salil Sachdev (Professor of Music, Music Department Bridgewater State University, USA).
Guihangtar perform original compositions and arrangements largely inspired by, but not limited to, nature and traditional music.

A collaborated project throughout 6 months between Lê Giang and Sino-Nom researcher Nguyễn Đình Hưng, vernacular architect Phạm Thanh Thủy and environmental consultant Nguyễn Thùy Dương on communal houses in Northern Vietnam and the Red River’s water flow.

HCMC-Exhibition “La Sourire de la Mutation”

Introducing a poetic perspective of Vietnam in its metamorphosis through artworks by three artists from France, Belgium, and Vietnam, as well as students from HCMC University of Fine Arts, and through participatory workshops for the audience.
The exploration of urban metamorphosis in a modern and multidisciplinary way is superimposed, questioning the transition between the past and the future.
HCMC – Exhibition “the line” by Tran Van Thao

The first solo exhibition in four years of Vietnam’s foremost abstract painter Tran Van Thao.
“the line” finds Tran in a contemplative mood. While previous bodies of work took inspiration from the artist’s surrounding environments and the little joys found in everyday life, his new paintings – stylistically sparser and utilizing a more muted palette yet larger in thematic scope – are somber ponderings on life’s passages and trajectories. There is an airiness about these new paintings, yet a marked tension as well conveying an equilibrium. Straight lines are the key element of the series, forming linear shapes of markers or arrows – perhaps needles of compasses. In contrast with the languid circles found in Tran’s other recent works, the lines suggest an almost urgent sense of direction and movement.
HCMC-Exhibition “Empty Forest” by Tuan Andrew Nguyen
The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, 15 Nguyen U Di, Thao Dien, District 2
A solo exhibition showcasing film, sculpture, photography and performance – revealing a landscape where the industry of ailing spiritual beliefs is feeding the most wretched of human desires, to irreversible effect.
Tuan Andrew Nguyen will transform the ground floor main hall into a menagerie of animalistic forms, a kind of large-scale diorama where the voice of the endangered sits on the edge of extinction (or in this particular case has already teetered into oblivion).
HCMC-Exhibition “Remnant” by Le The Lam
The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, 15 Nguyen U Di, Thao Dien, District 2,
Featuring the sorrow and anxiety of living in postwar Vietnam. In this exhibition, Le The Lam’s paintings depict different states of a ‘silent death’, using the presence of closed coffins and lingering shadow-like humans, interspersed at times with words.
