Transport Minister Dinh La Thang suspended the director of the Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong Expressway, La Chi Duc on November 21.

This was part of an effort to assign individual responsibility for the deterioration of the road, which has only been in use for more than one year.

Thang requested that the investor, Cuu Long Corporation for Investment, Development and Project Management of Transport Infrastructure (Cuu Long CIPM), formerly known as My Thuan Project Management Unit, deal strictly with the violations which led to the bad quality of the road. The company is required to submit it's proposal for disciplinary measures by November 30.

Cuu Long CIPM must also appoint a replacement for the suspended director La Chi Duc.

The Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong Expressway project was originally estimated to have a cost of VND6.5 trillion (USD311 million). Subsequently, the figure was raised to VND9.9 trillion (USD473.6 million). The 39.8-km highway was the first for automobiles only in Vietnam. It runs through Ho Chi Minh City, Long An and Tien Giang provinces.

According to the complaints of people in Long An Province, confirmed by provincial authorities, there is stretch of the road, more than 10 km long, that is riddled with potholes, posing a danger to drivers. Recently, a number of serious accidents have occurred on this section.

Recently, Thang fired the head of Danang International Airport's terminal project because he failed to meet planned deadlines. He also requested Project Management Unit No. 2 to get rid of five sub-contractors for slow progress of The Hanoi-Thai Nguyen expressway project.
