A pagoda in the central city of Danang has handed over 114 turtles to local forest rangers for their release back into the wild.

Nam Son Pagoda in Danang has handed over 114 turtles to local forest rangers for their release back into the wild.

The Hoa Vang District Forest Protection Department told Dantri/Dtinews on Thursday that Nam Son Pagoda had contacted them to hand over the turtles brought by Buddhists during animal release ceremonies.

"We're working with concerned agencies to send those turtles to the Cuc Phuong National Park which will take care of them before releasing them into the wild," the department said.

Nam Son Pagoda in Hoa Chau Commune has a large lake with many varieties of fish, snails and turtles that have been released by people during Buddhist ceremonies.

"The increasing number of fish and turtles being released in the lake may affect their environment," the department said. "So, we've encouraged the pagoda to hand in the big and rare ones for releasing them into the wild."
