The invitation to this celebration and the coming visit of the French Minister of the Armed Forces demonstrate the good bilateral relations, the friendship between the two countries and the common desire of the two countries to strengthen their partnership, according to a press release of the French Embassy on May 3.

During a phone call on October 20, 2023, Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed their hope that the Vietnam - France partnership will be strengthened in the coming years. The two countries will work together for regional stability, cooperate to respond to global challenges such as climate change and energy transition, and support development through innovation.

During his stay in Vietnam, the French Minister of the Armed Forces is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Defense Minister Gen. Phan Van Giang, and Head of the Party Central Committee’s External Relations Commission Le Hoai Trung, before attending the grand ceremony in Dien Bien Phu city.

The two sides are expected to sign a letter of intent between the French Ministry of the Armed Forces and the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense on defense cooperation.

The French Minister and the Secretary of State will have talks with French and Vietnamese veterans.
