Nha Trang City in the southern central province of Khanh Hoa has suspended Chinese tourists from Coronavirus-ravaged areas from Tuesday, which has seriously affected the local tourism sector.

According to the provincial Department of Tourism, travel firms in Khanh Hoa were serving Chinese visitors who had come to the province before January 27 and they will return to China before February.

On Tuesday, only 126 foreign tourists came to the city, representing a very sharp fall. However, the city is still open to serve Chinese tourists from areas not hit by the disease, said a representative from the Khanh Hoa Department of Tourism.

Many shops have suspended services. Meanwhile, some owners are seeking to sell or lease their shops.

An owner of a shop in the city expressed his concerns, saying that he was not sure how long he would maintain his business as the shop rental was quite costly.

Meanwhile, some drivers who specialise in serving Chinese visitors said they would be unemployed.

Hoang Van Vinh, chairman of Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa Tourism Association, admitted the bad impact on the local tourism industry in the short term. But, he noted that in the long run, it would be not a severe problem.

The city has attracted more domestic visitors and foreigners from many other countries such as Russia and South Korea.

Last year, 3.6 million international visitors came to Khanh Hoa, up 12.6% on-year, including up to 2.5 million from China, accounting for around 70% of the province’s total number of foreign travellers in the year.
