United Overseas Bank (UOB) has partnered with the Foreign Trade University (FTU) to launch the finance industry’s first tertiary education program designed for small business bankers in Vietnam.

Small businesses form the backbone of Vietnam’s economy, accounting for 97 per cent of the country’s total. These businesses are among the most optimistic within Asia-Pacific about their growth prospects, and four in five have sought external finance in 2016 to help them take advantage of business opportunities, according to the CPA Australia Asia-Pacific Small Business Survey 2016 - Market Summary: Vietnam.

As these companies manage and grow their business, they may need to navigate complex areas such as business planning, cash flow management and international trade risk.

The UOB-FTU Banker’s Executive Certificate Program will impart the specialist skills and knowledge that are necessary for bankers to help to address the needs of Vietnam’s small businesses. The program combines classroom-based study in the areas of credit and risk management, trade financing, and regional regulatory frameworks with practical skills training such as best practices on customer onboarding.

Upon completion of the program, UOB bankers will be better equipped to help SMEs in Vietnam with their business needs and to overcome the challenges they may face.

Mr. Harry Loh, Vietnam Country Manager at the UOB Ho Chi Minh City Branch, said that UOB is committed to ensuring its bankers have the in-depth knowledge and skills required to support the business growth ambitions of its customers.

“We expect that more small businesses in Vietnam will pursue business opportunities within the region as they tap the economic benefits arising from the ASEAN Economic Community,” Mr. Loh said. “As such, their needs will have to be supported by bankers who possess specialist skills and who understand what it takes to succeed in doing business across borders, whether it is in managing foreign exchange risk or navigating the regulatory landscape in different markets. This is why the UOB-FTU Banker’s Executive Certificate Program is timely, important and progressive, as graduates will develop the skills to help small businesses prepare for the future.”

“Our joint training program with UOB is a necessary, useful, and practical initiative to address the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the banking sector,” said Dr. Nguyen Xuan Minh, Director of the Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City Campus. “The program is specifically designed to improve the skills of bankers as they support Vietnam’s SMEs to seize regional growth opportunities. The partnership is a special one between the university and the bank as both parties bring their best capabilities and core competencies to create a quality training program that includes a combination of theory and practical learning.”

The program is part of UOB’s career development program to nurture local talent through continuous training and skills development. It is also in line with the bank’s long-term commitment to support Vietnam’s economy and the development of its banking industry. It expects to train 30 small business bankers in Vietnam by the end of this year.
