A school in HCM City has been abandoned for 15 years, stirring public outrage as the city faces a serious shortage of classrooms.

The VND20 billion Tran Van Kieu Primary School was built on a total area of over 6,600 square metres in District 6. The three-storey facility was put into use in late 2004 with 26 classrooms.

However, the facility soon faced serious subsidence which caused large cracks in the buildings after just four years and it has been closed since.

After 15 years since being abandoned, all the construction works have badly deteriorated. Some areas now see subsidence of nearly a metre and are covered by wild grass.

Trees have even grown through the cracked walls.

The roofs and glass windows have broken.

Some locals said that much of the school has been damaged by scrap metal collectors as there is no security.

People have complained about the waste of land, while the city is facing a serious school shortage.

District 6 authorities said they had conducted repairs at the school but could not guarantee safety. Therefore, they have proposed to build a new school on the site for VND95 billion.
