A 60-year-old woman from Ha Nam Province is in need of help to take care of her old mother and a son suffering from mental illness, who often beat her when he has a fit.

Each day Quyen Thi Ua, of Thuong Village, works on the farm before she goes out to her second job of collecting garbage. Ua said that, due to the heat, she can only earn a few thousand VND a day.

Ua's mother said, "Ua brought her children home 30 years ago. The eldest son, Thien, has mentally ill since birth. When the second son was three years old, he needed intestinal surgery, but we couldn't afford it. So her husband left her. When Thien goes into one of his fits he does sometimes beat both Ua and me."

Now, Ua's second son has also left home. Ua's mother is 90 years old so she moves around with great difficultly. Ua said, "One time I got home when it was raining and my mother was sitting in the rain. Thien comes and goes unpredictably. He doesn't even recognise his grandmother."

Ua's health is also getting worse. Ua also has rheumatoid arthritis.

Ngo Duc Toan, head of Thuong Village, said that Ua's family is one of the worst cases in the area. "Each month, we provide the elders in our village, including Ua's mother, VND180,000 and we also give support to Thien. The local authorities can only help so much though. The villagers can help Ua by giving her rice, vegetables and eggs sometimes. But they really are in need of more," he said.
