Hai Duong orphanage overwhelmed by abandoned children

Four children have been abandoned at an orphanage in Hai Duong Province, pushing carers to the limit as they struggle to look after more children than they can afford.

Four abandoned children

The new arrivals, three girls and one boy, were left at the Hai Duong humanitarian centre in Cam Phuong Ward of Hai Duong City.

“We’re struggling to support these children and pay for baby-sitters due to modest funding," said the centre’s deputy director, Nguyen Trung Dung. "We simply cannot afford to take any more children now.”

The oldest of the new arrivals, Nguyen Ngan Ha, is believed to be aged 18 months, while Tran Dinh Hung is just six months, and Tran Thu Trang and Tran Thu Thao are over three months old. Their names and birthdates are not known and they were named after the cadre from the orphanage who found them. Ngan Ha was seriously malnourished and suffering respiratory imflamation.

The other three children are in good health.

Tran Van Truc, a cadre at the centre, says there has been no let up in the number of abandoned children found by or brought to the centre. He found three abandoned children within six months. They were named after his family as Tran Dinh Hung, Tran Thu Trang and Tran Thu Thao.

“Last October I picked up two children at the centre’s gate," Truc said. "We were afraid that people may continue to abandon their children but we don't have the resources to care for them all. We put in a light at the gate in the hope mothers would think twice before abandoning their children outside."

The centre has only two small sparsely furnished rooms for the children. It received VND750,000 a month from the government to care for each child.

“We really hope the government will increase funding for these ill-fated children, but more we hope they will find a new family soon,” Dung said.
