A corner of the embroidered piece

An enormous embroidered piece entitled “Coi xua” (Old Origins) to mark the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long Hanoi will be o­n display at the Hanoi Cultural Friendship Palace from August 25th to 29th.

This is an opportunity for Hanoians and visitors to see the giant embroidered piece made by hundreds of artisans from the Coi Xua Handicraft and Export Co in Van Lam craft village in the northern province of Ninh Binh to express their love for the capital city.

The 5.5 m by 31 m embroidered piece, weighs 1.5 tonnes, was begun in 2009 and has used nearly 170 sq.m of Italian wool and around 250 kg of thread.

The embroidered piece contains images of significant events in the history of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh province) under the reign of the Dinh, Le and Ly dynasties, including the founding of Dai Co Viet (the former name of Vietnam), the landscape of Hoa Lu with the temples of Kings Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh, and Ly Thai To\'s royal decree to move the capital city to Hanoi.

The embroidery is proposed to the Bui Xuan Phai entitled “For the love of Hanoi 2010”.
