HCM City eyes 9.5% growth rate for next year
The People's Council of HCM City ratified a resolution on four major economic goals for next year during its closing session yesterday.
The resolution calls for the city to reach GDP (gross domestic product) growth of 9.5 per cent; per capita income, US$4,000; total investment for development, VND248.5 trillion ($11.9 billion), accounting for 36 per cent of the city's GDP; and the city's CPI (consumer price index) to be lower than the country's figure.
It also targeted export revenues to increase by 13.5 per cent compared with 2012.
The 11 social development goals include a targeted unemployment rate of 4.8 per cent and a reduction in length of traffic jams to 30 minutes each.
Other goals: 89 per cent of households in urban areas to have access to clean water; 609 million times using public transport services by passengers; and 100 per cent of industrial parks and export processing zones equipped with standard waste water treatment systems.
Speaking at the closing session, chairman of the HCM City People's Committee Le Hoang Quan said the city's committee was responsible for weaknesses and shortcomings in socio-economic management in 2012.
Quan said the committee had drawn experiences from this year's management to map out more positive measures to help HCM City reach the socio-economic targets set for 2013.
Voters' concerns
Quan said the city authority would focus its efforts on helping companies curb difficulties to boost production and trade.
These efforts would help put inflation under control and would aid in re-structuring the city's economy in line with international integration.
To stabilise financial and credit markets, the efficiency of investments would be improved and production and trade would be promoted.
Quan said construction, urban development and planning management would be better controlled, while efforts to combat natural disasters and responses to climate change would be enhanced to improve sustainable development.
Further investments in human resources would be made in health, education and training sectors as well as the science and technology sector.
Quan said the city authority would enhance the efficiency of State management, and speed up administration reform and programmes to fight corruption and wastefulness.
The city would make efforts to improve national defense, security, political stability and social order and safety, and would take measures to rid the city of social evils.
In her closing speech, Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam, chairwoman of the HCM City People's Council, asked the city authority to closely implement the Council's resolution on socio-economic development and to ensure that city residents have a happy Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.
