A blind woman from Thai Nguyen Province is calling for financial support to help treat her son who is suffering from retinal cancer.

Pham Thi Huong said her eyes were fine at birth until she was two years old. Everything became blurrier and gradually, she lost sight. "I graduated from the teacher training faculty and taught at Nguyen Dinh Chieu School for the Blind. But I was made redundant when they cut the staff," Huong said.

Huong has two gold medals from her time when she was a member of the national chess team. She also won silver medal at the ASEAN Para Games 2009 and a bronze medal in 1014. Chess is not only her passion, as the prize money from the competitions also supplements her income.

Huong's son diagnosed with retinal cancer

Huong and her boyfriend do not dare to obtain a marriage certification because her boyfriend's family opposes his relationship with a blind woman. Misfortune befell them when their six month-old son was diagnosed with retinal cancer.

"My teacher income can't cover the treatment cost and travel. Doctors said my son could still be cured but he'd lose his eyes if we can't go to the hospital regularly," Huong's boyfriend, Nguyen Thanh Trung, said.

Huong was a member of the national chess team

Dr. Pham Thi Minh Chau from the National Paediatric Hospital in Hanoi said, "We are using chemotherapy with laser treatment to minimise the tumours. His left eye has got better and can be saved but the tumour in his right eye is still very big."

Chau went on to say that most of the costs were covered by health insurance but the travel and accommodation fees were still a burden for the family.
