Hanoi authorities have decided to extend opening hours until just 2 am for restaurants and bars starting from September 1.

According to the Hanoi People’s Committee, the extended opening hours will be piloted in Hoan Kiem District between Friday and Sunday every week.

Businesses which operate past midnight have to meet ‘security criteria’ and register with the district as well as ensure they are sufficiently soundproofed.

Currently, clubs, music venues and karaoke are banned from opening between midnight and 8 am, while internet cafes and other recreational services are banned from 10 pm to 8 am. However, many have ignored the regulation, opening after midnight.

Hanoi pedestrianised streets in Hoan Kiem District in the Old Quarter on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

The capital will also pedestrianise more roads in Hoan Kiem Lake District at weekends from October this year.
