Thousands to join traffic accident victim requiem

Around 10,000 people will participate in a requiem to commemorate the victims of traffic accidents next month in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

The participants including Buddhist monks, nuns, followers and relatives of victims who will join the ceremony to be held at Trinh Temple in Yen Tu historical site on November 13. Every participant in the requiem will lift a candle as a tribute to the dead and show sympathy with their families and relatives.

They will also observe a minute of silence to commemorate the victims of traffic accidents.

The event will be the fifth time Vietnam holds the ceremony which is among the activities organised by the National Road Safety Committee to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

At the press conference to inform the requiem, Chairman of the National Road Safety Committee Khuat Viet Hung, said that each day, traffic accidents kill 24 people and leave around 60 others with lifelong disabilities daily in Vietnam.

Road accidents also caused loss of about VND4 million to VND6 trillion (USD180 million-USD268.7 million) annually.

Hung noted that the requiem is also aimed to remind the public of better awareness in traffic participation through a message to the public that “Don’t let traffic accidents into a disaster. Each person should conform to traffic laws”, Hung added.
