Eight more tourist vessels have just been suspended from operating in Ha Long Bay due to serious safety violations according to the Quang Ninh Inland Waterway Port Authority.

Director of the Quang Ninh Inland Waterway Port Authority, Le Hong Thang said that the suspension was proposed by the Ha Long City People's Committee on May 23 following various violations found on eight ships including Thien Cung, Hong Long, Hai Au, Bhaya and Bai Tho.

The city's Inspection team on May 13 found that the Thien Cung 88, Hong Long and Hong Hai 12 vessels were also accompanied by other boats while operating on the Bay, Thang said.

The Bai Tho was found letting two passengers jump off swimming in a banned area, while Bhaya picked up passengers at wrong locations, he added.

Thang said that these violations seriously affected the safety of tourists in the Bay and should by strictly punished.

"Besides issuing fines, we've decided to suspended these vessels from 10 to 30 days," he said.

Dozens of tourist junks have been temporarily suspended or permanently banned for safety violations since the beginning of this year.

The committee’s action was carried out following rising number boat fires and accidents in Ha Long Bay in recent years, which have affected the province’s reputation among tourists.
