8M foreign arrivals up 23%

Foreign arrivals to Vietnam exceeded 1.32 million in August, up 11.3 per cent against July, according to a report released by the General Statistics Office on August 29.

The figure for the first eight months rose 22.8 per cent year-on-year to over 10.4 million.

Visitors from Asia accounted for 77.2 per cent of the total in the first eight months, up 27 per cent year-on-year, with most coming from South Korea (up 52.4 per cent), China (28.2 per cent), Taiwan China (14 per cent), Malaysia (13 per cent), Thailand (10.9 per cent), Singapore (5.4 per cent), and Japan (5.3 per cent).

The number of visitors from Europe grew 9.8 per cent year-on-year, with those from Sweden up 14.2 per cent, the Netherlands 8.4 per cent, and Russia 7.5 per cent. Arrivals from five Western European countries entitled to visa exemptions also climbed, with those from Italy up 15.3 per cent, Spain 10.9 per cent, France 10.6 per cent, Germany 7.9 per cent, and the UK 6.7 per cent.

Tourism revenue hit VND26.8 trillion ($1.16 billion) in the first eight months, up 17.6 per cent year-on-year.

The tourism sector has set a target of welcoming 15-17 million foreign visitors this year, up 16-30 per cent annually, while hosting some 80 million domestic tourists.
