The last coronavirus patient will be discharged from HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases on Friday according to a local doctor.

The Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases

The hospital's director, Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, told the Lao Dong Newspaper that the 73-year-old American patient had fully recovered from the virus.

"Latest tests carried out between February 12 and 17 showed that he did have coronavirus," the doctor said. "He will be released on the afternoon of February 21."

According to the doctor, the patient was admitted to hospital on January 31 after coughing for six days. His lungs had been affected and he tested positive for coronavirus.

"We had to give him oxygen therapy and he had gradually recovered after 10 days of treatment," the doctor said.

This was the 15th among 16 coronavirus patients in Vietnam to be discharged from hospital.

Earlier this  month, two Chinese men, Li Ding, 66, and his 28-year-old son also recovered from the virus after being treated at the Cho Ray Hospital in the city.

On February 20, three patients including a three-month-old baby girl were also released from hospitals in Hanoi and Vinh Phuc Province.

Speaking at a conference on Wednesday, Dr Lương Ngọc Khue, director of the ministry’s Department of Medical Examination and Treatment and deputy head of the sub-committee on treatment at the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control said although there are no specific drugs that kill the virus, the treatment regime applied by Vietnamese hospitals had proved to work.

Even those successfully treated reported underlying diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and lung cancer.

Khue said since the early days of the epidemic, the health sector had immediately convened the professional council with leading professors to develop and update guidelines for early treatment.

These guidelines have been implemented at hospitals and health clinics nationwide. After the first three patients were discharged from HCM City’s Cho Ray Hospital, Khanh Hoa Tropical Hospital in central Khanh Hoa Province and Thanh Hoa Province General Hospital in central Thanh Hoa Province, the committee continued to adjust their treatment regimen.

Specific treatment steps, including initial reception instructions, quarantine, drug usage and emergency equipment for critically-ill patients have been updated to deal with the epidemic.

No new infected cases have been reported in the country since February 13. Among the 16 people that tested positive, none have become severely ill and no fatalities will be reported, he said.
