Heavy damage caused by heavy rains in Lai Chau

Three days of torrential rains have caused flash floods, landslides and huge losses for people in Lai Chau Province.

  

Landslide in Lai Chau


Landslides blocked a part of National Highway 4H in Hua Bum Commune and caused congestion. It's estimated that 5,000 cubic metres of rocks and soils fell onto the road and there may be more landslides. Lai Chau Department of Transportation has asked the contractor to keep the machines on stand-by in case there are more landslides. The authorities also blocked the highway part in Hua Bum to ensure traffic safety.

Reports from the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Lai Chau showed that Lai Chau experienced heavy rains and torrential rain between July 11-13. The total rainfall from 7 pm on July 11 to 1 pm on July 13 was 30-100mm. The total rainfall in Tan Uyen Town was 198mm.

Two houses in Tan Uyen were swept away, one house in Tam Duong District was destroyed and 25 other houses were heavily flooded. 2,000 square metres of corns, 10 hectares of rice and one hectare of flowers were completely destroyed.


 

Highway 32 blocked after the landslide

Tan Uyen District People's Committee supported two families whose houses were swept away VND21m each. Pac Ta Commune People's Committee also gave the families 50kg of rice each.

Many roads were damaged and caused congestion including the National Highway 4H, Highway 32, Road 128, 129, and 136. Ban Giang Commune People's Committee reported that lightning damaged five computers, four wifi routers, and loudspeaker system at its headquarters. The estimated damage was over VND4.8bn (USD206,000).
