More than 260 students have just been safely evacuated from a school in Dong Ha City in the central province of Quang Tri as flood water has continued to rise in the area.

According to teacher Nguyen The Nhan at Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School, the flood suddenly came on the morning of October 28 when 262 grade 6 students were studying in their classrooms. Teachers had to call rescue teams and parents asking for support to evacuate the students.

"The floodwater quickly submerged the schoolyard and all surrounding roads at about 8.30 am," the teacher said. 'Some areas were put over one metre under water. We had called for support from the police who came with boats to evacuate the students. The military also arrived to help transfer the students to their parents."

According to local police, this was not the first time they evacuated students from Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School due to flooding.

"This situation often occurs at this school during flood season," a policeman said.

The central region has seen heavy rains and many provinces including Quang Nam, Quang Tri, Binh Dinh, and Thua Thien-Hue have faced serious flooding over the past few days. It is forecasted that heavy rains will continue in the region until October 30.
