A grand military parade at Dien Bien Province's stadium this morning, May 7, celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.

Vietnamese PM Pham Minh Chinh, Acting State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, and other leaders and former government and state leaders attended. French Minister of the Armed Forces Sebastian Lecornu, Secretary of State Patricia Miralles and several French war veterans also attended the ceremony.

After the flag-raising ceremony with a 21-gun salute at 7.45, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh delivered a speech highlighting the important role of the Dien Bien Phu Victory in Vietnamese and world history. He expressed great thanks to President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap and the soldiers and people who contributed to the historic victory.

"Our victory at Dien Bien Phu was achieved through the spirit of solidarity, self-reliance, great leadership, the will to fight, and the determination to win," the PM noted. "The victory was significant for Vietnam and many other countries fighting for liberation and freedom."

The parade started at 8.45 am with 11 helicopters flying national flags over Dien Bien.

Over 12,000 people participated in the parade.

On May 7, 1954, the Vietnamese army raised the national flag on top of French General De Castries' command bunker. President Ho Chi Minh said the Dien Bien Phu Victory was a golden milestone in history that directly led to the signing of the Geneva Accords, which ended the war and restored peace in Indochina. It also created the foundation and conditions for the Vietnamese people to secure victory in the resistance war against the US, liberate the South, and reunify the country in 1975.
