A high-speed ferry connecting Con Dao Island in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City will start operation on May 13.

According to the HCM City Transport Department, the three-storey Thang Long high-speed boat, operated by Phu Quoc Express JSC., will depart daily from the Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port in Nha Be District at 8 am.

The Thang Long can carry 1,017 passengers and is Vietnam's largest express boat.

Ticket prices for the five-hour trip range between VND615,000 and VND1.10 million per passenger. A high-speed boat connecting Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port and Bach Dang Port in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 will help with transport links.

The ferry service will better serve travel demand, especially during Con Dao Airport's upgrade.

Con Dao Island is about 230km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The 76-square-kilometre island has a population of over 10,000 and is well known for its white sand beaches, deep blue water, and colourful coral reefs. The French colonialists and Americans turned the island into a prison that jailed Vietnamese revolutionaries. The island has now become a famous tourist spot, which welcomed over 580,000 visitors in 2023.
