Le Van Doan, 43, lives in Tan Son Village in Tan Phuc Commune and cares for three children. The eldest is 18, and the youngest is 11. They live in a dilapidated 15-square-metre house.
Doan married Le Thi Thinh in 2005 and had three children. In 2016, following consecutive fevers, Thinh was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, he abandoned his work to take Thinh to hospital.

When his wife died in 2020, Doan had to seek his relatives’ help to buy a coffin and hold the funeral for his wife as he did not have enough money. At that time he already owed over VND200 millions which he borrowed from relatives and friends to cover his wife's treatment.
Every month, he earns a modest income from construction work. Doan also has to take care of a 70-year-old aunt.

Le Van Hung, head of Tan Son Village, said that Doan’s family was the poorest in the area. Residents have provided help, but it has been limited.
