A Su-22 fighter jet carrying two pilots has crashed on July 26 while training in Nghe An Province.

The accident occurred at 12 pm on a hill in Nghia Yen Commune, Nghia Dan District. After being informed by the locals, the authorities quickly arrived and cordoned off the scene.

Initial reports show that the fighter jet belongs to Regiment 923 of the Vietnam People's Air Force in Tho Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province. The two pilots were from Hanoi and Thai Binh Province. There was an explosion and debris was found at the scene which is 100 kilometres away from Vinh City and far from residential areas.

No civilians are hurt. Colonel General Nguyen Trong Nghia, deputy chairman of the General Political Department of the People's Army of Vietnam said the two pilots had died were Lieutenant Colonel Khuat Manh Tri and Colonel Pham Giang Nam.

The jet started the training session at 11.16 am but lost contact at 11.35 am.

The search and rescue mission has been hindered by heavy rains and rough terrain.
