Hai Duong fatal accident driver tested drug positive

The truck driver who caused a tragic accident in the northern province of Hai Duong killing eight people has been tested positive for drugs.

According to the provincial police, driver Luong Van Tam, 28, from Cao Bang Province fled the scene after the accident which occurred in Kim Thanh District on Monday. However, he turned himself in several hours later at a local police station.

The police said that the truck is owned by Newpro Trading and Production Company located in Hanoi’s Ha Dong District.

Lawyer Nguyen Anh Thom from Hanoi Lawyers’ Association said that Tam would be sentenced 15 years in prison due to the incident.

If had been hired to drive the truck for the company, the company and he would have to jointly compensation for the families of the victims.

On Monday afternoon, the truck was running on National Highway 5 from Hanoi when it rammed into a group of commune officials who were walking along the road. They were returning to work after burning incense at the local war cemetery.

The case left eight dead and seven injured.

Vu Dinh Tinh, chairman of Kim Thanh District People’s Committee, said that the local authorities had provided the injured with VND3 million each (USD130.43 million) and those who died VND5 million each.
