A series of aquaculture cages have sprung up at the foot of De Gi Bridge in the central province of Binh Dinh, posing safety risks for fishing boats.

The cages cover an area of eight to 16 square metres each scattered near De Gi Bridge in Phu My District, around 70 kilometres from central Quy Nhon, mainly raise oysters, cobia and pomfret. In addition, local residents have also set up floating metal cages to serve aquaculture farming.

The 400-metre-long De Gi Bridge opened to traffic early this year, connecting My Thanh Commune in Phu My District and Cat Khanh Commune in Phu Cat District.

At the foot of the bridge, there is also a fishing port with a large number of boats coming in and out; therefore, the fish cages has seriously affected waterway traffic and posed safety risks.

Nguyen Trung Hieu, vice chairman of Cat Khanh Commune, said residents in the commune have started adopting cage aquaculture farming since last year. Initially, there were only six families raising aquaculture in cages and then the figure has risen to 20.

Due to difficulties in catching fish and other seafood, many residents have switched to aquaculture farming.

Hieu admitted that fish farming cages in the area have caused pollution on the environment because the food is released directly onto the water, and also blocked traffic of fishing boats.

Nguyen Ngoc Hanh, chairman of My Thanh Commune, said there are 58 families in the commune raising aquaculture in cages.

After working with local authorities, the families pledged to remove their cages.

The area at the foot of De Gi Bridge is not zoned for aquaculture farming.

Tran Van Phuc, director of Binh Dinh’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said provincial authorities would review the case to ensure people’s livelihoods are maintained but still comply with regulations.
