Tran Thi Dung, 60, has just been sent to the Hanoi Heart Hospital following a heart attack. She has escaped critical condition, but doctors said that she needs surgery to treat her heart problems.

"I had to borrow from everywhere to collect enough money, but it’s now run out after some days staying in hospital," Dung said. "Now I don't know where to find VND80 million (USD3,250) for the heart operation. I've told doctors that I would have to refuse treatment as I can't afford the fee."

The poor woman said that she had suffered from congenital heart disease and so she had to depend on her parents due to weak health. After her parents died, some relatives and neighbours helped build a small house for her and she has lived alone since.

"My heart problems have recently worsened, but I didn't have money to go to hospital until I fainted and was brought here," she said. "I only had just over VND4 million (USD163) at that time which I gathered from all my savings and borrowed some more from my brothers, sisters and neighbours."

Her brother, Tran Tu Nhan said they have five brothers and sisters but all were poor and couldn't help much.

"When doctors said that my sister needed a VND80 million operation, we tried to contribute but have so far managed to gather only VND10 million," Nhan said. "We hope that people can help save our sister."

Doctor Le The Kien at the Hanoi Heart Hospital said that Dung needed an urgent operation as her condition was critical and she may face a stroke at any time.
