Vietnam’s northern region has been forecasted to experience more hailstorms and whirlwinds until early June.

According to National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting’s Forecasting Department head Nguyen Van Huong, the temperature in Vietnam would be higher than average this year due to the impact of the El Nino phenomenon.

More hail, thunderstorms, and whirlwinds would occur between now and early June, Huong added.

People should not seek shelter under trees during storms to avoid the risk of trees being uprooted or getting struck by lightning. When there is a thunderstorm, people should stay indoors, Huong noted.

It is also important for people to monitor weather conditions on the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting website or through mass media channels.

Over the past three days, whirlwinds killed one person and injured eight others in Vietnam. Meanwhile, around 6,891 houses in the provinces of Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Son La, Phu Tho and Quang Ninh were damaged.

Whirlwinds often start in Vietnam in March and April and end in early November.
