Around 100 tonnes of seaweed has drifted onto Do Son Beach in the northern city of Haiphong over recent days.

This is the first time Do Son Beach has experienced the phenomenon, according to local residents.

The seaweed started hitting the beach on April 20 and reached its peak a day later.

Do Son Beach management board has mobilised nearly 100 workers along with excavators to gather the seaweed and transport it to Dinh Vu Landfill.

The seaweed mixed with sand has caused more difficulties for the cleanup which is scheduled to be finished before April 27.

A representative from the Haiphong People's Committee said that Do Son Beach was where rivers flow into the sea. Therefore, in heavy rains, seaweed and algae are often brought ashore. In previous years, the amount of seaweed drifting to the beach was insignificant, but this year it has been huge.
