Tuyet and her mother 

Tuyet currently does part-time jobs after school to earn money to cover her mother’s treatment. At the hospital, they often share charity meals to save costs.

Duyen was born into a poor family. Due to limitations in health and appearance, she chose not to get married. At 35, she met a man and became pregnant. However, Tuyet does not know anything about her father.

In 2017, Duyen was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes and had to have surgery. Not long after, she found out she also had kidney stones. But doctors said that the kidney stones had grown too large, and only one was removed. The remaining kidney has gradually deteriorated, resulting in severe kidney failure.

Vo Huu Hung, head of Village 4 in Bao Thanh Commune, said Duyen’s family was poor.

Every week, Duyen has to undergo kidney dialysis three times. She and her daughter rent a six-square metre room at VND500,000 (USD20) near the hospital to live.

Hung noted, "The mother and child rely on a social welfare of VND540,000 a month and charity meals.”
