HCM City has piloted collecting pavement rental fees on 11 streets from May 9.

The pilot programme has been carried out on Hoang Sa, Mac Dinh Chi, Hai Chieu, Chu Manh Trinh, Le Thanh Ton, Phan Boi Chau, Phan Chau Trinh, Ham Nghi, Tran Hung Dao, Co Bac and Vo Van Kiet streets which are all in the city's District 1.

According to Nguyen Thanh Phat, head of District 1's urban management board, those wanting to rent the pavements for business must apply via an app.

The app will inform residents about usage through a digital map.

On May 9, a zoned pavement section on Hai Trieu Street in Ben Nghe Ward was available for rental.

Part of the pavement on Le Thanh Ton Street in Ben Thanh Ward has also been made available for rent.

Rented pavement must ensure at least 1.50 metres space for pedestrians, while roads must allow at least two one-way car lanes.

Tran Huy Hoang, who runs a restaurant on Hai Trieu Street, said he had registered to use the pavement for VND100,000 (USD3.92) per square metre per month. He said it was very convenient to pay the rent through the app.
