The Vietnam Register is currently drafting a circular to be submitted to the Ministry of Transport for consideration in late July.

The new regulations will compel captains of high-speed passenger ships to attend a short-term training course on the use of radars.

After the tragic Din Ky boat accident on Saigon River in late May which left 16 dead, the Ministry of Transport requested localities to tighten control over the operation of passenger vessels.

Earlier, Quang Ninh provincial authorities issued new requirements for tour boats operating in Ha Long Bay after an accident killed 12 passengers in May.

The provincial government requires passenger boats to have automatic fire-fighting systems, along with GPS and onboard cameras. All crew members on these boats must also have a high school diploma, together with a nationally recognised certificate in their field.
