Traffic safety month sees increased accidents

The first week of the 2011 National Traffic Safety Month has seen more accidents despite tougher measures taken.

Traffic accident on September 9 killed one, injured 2 in central Nghe An Province

According to statistics from the Road and Railway Traffic Police Department, during the week there have been 236 traffic accidents causing 216 deaths, 178 injuries. There were also 12 railway accidents causing 6 deaths and 7 injuries.

As such, 35 road accidents had occurred a day, causing 32 deaths against the average 29 accidents and 25 deaths a day of the last two weeks of August.

National Traffic Safety month began on August 31.

And from September 1-7, traffic police nation-wide had dealt with more than 88,200 traffic offences on roads, impounding 156 automobiles and 10,777 motorbikes.

The Road and Railway Traffic Police Department have put more people on patrol in places like Ha Nam, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and many others in order to increase safety. During this first week, local police in the provinces with increased police presence have reported more than 2,800 offences, impounded 121 vehicles and revoked 120 licenses.
