Taxi driver busted after Interpol delegate scam

Hanoi police arrested a taxi driver a week after he overcharged two Singaporean passengers who visited the capital for the 80th Interpol General Assembly meeting.

Colonel Nguyen Duc Chung, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Police Department, said the driver working for the Thanh Hung Ltd. Co. which owns the Phu Gia taxi brand was captured on November 5 while hiding in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong, more than 1,000 km away from Hanoi.

At 8pm on October 28, after dining at the Quan An Ngon Restaurant on Phan Boi Chau Street, Hoan Kiem District, Chen Ang Dani and Than Sha Pen took a taxi to the National Convention Centre in Tu Liem District where the 80th Interpol General Assembly meeting was held.

The driver forced them to pay USD200 (around VND4.3 million) and SGD100 (around VND1.6 million) for travelling just 10 km.

The victims said that following an argument over the outrageous taxi fare, they had also left an Iphone 4 in the car which was also stolen by the driver.

The 80th Interpol General Assembly took place in Hanoi from October 31 and November 3, attracting 1,200 delegates, including senior police officials from 188 Interpol member countries.
