Over the past few days, many Hanoians have caught sight of traffic police sporting pith helmets. It was reported that the Ministry of Public Security issued the decision and if effective, the new change will be put into practice nationwide.

From April 1, Hanoi's traffic police are required to wear a pith helmet when on duty, replacing the soft military-style hat worn previously.

Due to the extremely hot weather of Hanoi in recent years, Hanoi police submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Public Security asking that the ministry provide pith helmets for traffic policemen. This will help to reduce health risks from sun burn and heat exertion for traffic officers allowing them to more effectively work the streets of Hanoi.

The Ministry of Public Security has directed for this to be pilot programme tested in Hanoi, and if effective, it will be implemented nationwide.
