Vietnam’s outstanding players have failed after nine days of tough competition at the 2012 Asian Chess Championships which closed in Ho Chi Minh City on May 13.

In the men’s standard chess event, the gold medal was bagged by Negi Parimarjan from India (Elo 2640), who is the world’s seed No7, with seven points after nine rounds.

Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem ranked 15 with 5.5 points, while his teammate, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo 2656) was placed 19/72 with the same points.

The champion title in the women’s standard chess event went to Sukandar Irine Kharisma from Indonesia (Elo 2288, world’s seed No20) with seven points.

Nguyen Thi Thanh An and Le Thanh Tu only secured 6th and 11th position, respectively.

Due to their modest results at the Champs, Vietnamese players failed to take any berths to the World Chess Championships for men next year and for women in 2014.

In the women’s blitz chess event, the first place was secured by Zhao Xue from China (Elo 2549) with 7 points. Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Thanh An (Elo 2301) ranked fourth with 6.5 points.

So Wesley from the Philippines (Elo 2653) earned 7.5 points to win a gold medal in the men’s blitz chess event. Only 0.5 point lower than Wesley, Vietnamese player Nguyen Van Huy (Elo 2502) clinched silver medal. With the same point, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son was placed 4th.
