Flood kills five in central region

The heavy rains on September 5 and 6 caused flooding in many areas of the central region and killed at least five people.

 

 Flood in Khanh Thanh Commune

Thanh Hoa Province was heavily hit, particularly in Thuong Xuan, Lang Chanh or Ngoc Lac districts.

In Thuong Xuan District, many localities such as Luong Son and Ngoc Phung communes were isolated on September 6. Hundreds of hectares of crops were lost and roads and communication lines destroyed.

Vu Ngoc Nam, Deputy Chairman of Ngoc Phung Commune People's Committee in Thuong Xuan District, said that two people were killed by the flood. The local authorities began evacuating the households to higher ground.

In Nghe An Province, the Committee of Flood and Storm Control reported three deaths and five injuries, Those killed were a four year old girl and two men, whose bodies have not been recovered. In Do Luong District, flood have submerge Quang Son, My Son, Tru Son and Nhan Son communes. Especially in Quang Son Commune, 200 hectares of 323 hectares have lost in the flood.

Because much of the flood water came from the river, drainage systems were blocked. About 100 workers and officers were called in to clear the stream in Dien Chau District. The Vu Giang River is highly susceptible to erosion in many places.

In Ha Tinh Province, 1,500 households along with about 1,300 hectares of agricultural land were submerged in the communes of Huong Trach, Huong Do, Loc Yen, and Gia Pho. The Province reported six people injured and one officer was swept away by the waters.

Ha Van Hung, secretary of Huong Khe's People's Committee, said the authorities have directed agencies to carry out flood damage control procedures and offer aid to those living in affected areas.
