The supermarket BigC was compelled to stop selling t-shirts bearing maps of Vietnam that do not include the Spratly and Paracel islands.

Motviet T-shirts with 'incomplete' Vietnamese map

An official from BigC Thang Long said that they have since required the producer, Motviet, to change their t-shirt designs.

“If they want to use the map on clothing, the islands must be included, as they are a part of the country's territory," he said.

He added that BigC will make efforts to monitor the content of products sold at the store in the future.

Missing the Spratly and Paracel archipelagos

Vi Thanh Tung, a consumer, who first complained about the shirts, said “These are locally-made products and are high quality. But the design could cause some misunderstandings about Vietnamese sovereignty over the islands for foreign consumers."

Phan Ngoc Mai, Deputy Director of the Vietnam's Map and Measurement Department, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, said that several Chinese products that similarly may convey wrong messages, including lanterns and globes have been seen with similar flaws.

BigC still has inventory of Motviet T-shirts

Duong Danh Dy, an expert in Chinese affairs, said that despite the fact that this could seen as a minor oversight, it is important because of China's recent claims on the islands.
