Traffic accidents claim 117 lives during holiday

As many as 117 people died and 151 others were injured from traffic accidents nationwide including 220 road accidents that killed 113 people and four railway accidents killing four during the five-day holiday (from April 30 to May 5).

According to the National Committee for Traffic Safety, on May 3 alone, the country witnessed 59 cases, claiming 26 fatalities and 39 injuries, mainly road accidents.

The same day, traffic police handled nearly 5,224 traffic law violation cases, collecting total administrative fines of VND1.469 billion and detaining 13 cars and 1,327 motorbikes. 

After five days of dealing with traffic law violations, traffic police contributed a total of over VND17 billion to the State budget and temporarily seized 68 cars and 5,171 motorcycles.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc who is also Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety on May 3 sent an urgent telegram urging the designated ministries, provinces and cities throughout the country to prepare all necessary measures to ensure road safety and tackle traffic jams during the holiday. 

He also requested the Ministry of Public Health to ensure sufficient medical workers to give first aid and timely treatment to traffic accident-related patients.
