Chinese vessels continue ramming and firing water cannons at Vietnamese ships in the area of the East Sea where an illegal Chinese oil rig is located.
On May 13 Vietnamese ships attempted to approach the Chinese oil rig, Haiyang 981, but were driven off with the aggression of Chinese vessels. One Chinese ship followed and blocked a Vietnamese ship. When the Vietnamese captain demanded and end to to the aggressive behavior by the Chinese within Vietnamese territorial waters, the Chinese commander replied that they were within China's waters.
Another Vietnamese ship was also rammed and received blasts from water cannons by at by two Chinese ships. Luckily no one was injured.
The Chinese vessels have formed three rings of protection around the oil rig. The innermost consists of supply ships and the outer rings are patrol and fishing boats. According to the accounts of Vietnamese captains, the Chinese vessels are determined to protect the illegal rig.
