Song Tranh Hydropower Plant 2 faces continued earthquakes

This morning, July 8, the strongest earthquake of the year, at a magnitude of 3.6, hit the area of Song Tranh Hydropower Plant.

While it was the strongest quake of 2014, it was only the latest in a long string of earthquakes in the area. The last was on the morning of June 30, when Song Tranh Hydropower Plant in the central province of Quang Nam’s Bac Tra My District faced two consecutive earthquakes.The earthquake measuring 3.6 on the richter scale caused local houses to shake for 5-6 seconds. Over the past four days, the area has seen four earthquakes on the 2.5 richter scale.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoang Hoa, of Tra Giang Commune, said that at around 1:18am people heard two explosions from Song Tranh Hydropower Plant 2, shaking houses for several seconds.

According to analysis from the Institute of Geophysics’ earthquake monitoring stations, these were two light earthquakes. The first was a 2.6 on the richter scale and the second was 1.7.

The area of the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant has been rocked by hundreds of quakes since 2011. The strongest occurred on November 15, 2012, measuring 4.7 on the richter scale. It lasted for several seconds, causing panic among residents there.

Between September and November 2012, Song Tranh 2 Hydro-power Plant experienced more than 70 earthquakes of different scales.
