Flash flood sweeps away transport boats
  • By Pham Ngoc Trien | dtinews.vn | July 15, 2014 08:58 AM

On July 14, dozens of transport boats in Lao Cai Province were swept away by sudden flooding.

The boats were used for the transport goods across Nam Thi River at the border in Bat Xat and Bao Thang districts. No one was on the boats when the anchor ropes snapped due to strain. Heavy rains fell on Lao Cai Province throughout the night, bringing with it flooding from upstream. The flood then made it's way to the section of Red River in Lao Cai province.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting of Lao Cai Province, this was the biggest flood since early 2014. Official reports have not been released, however the flood destroyed all the crops on the lower fields near the banks of the Red River and caused problems for the Giang Dong Bridge construction site.

Municipal authorities are still dealing with the fallout and requesting that owners of ships retrieve their vessels and bring them back to port.
