Quang Ninh storms leave 23 dead and missing

Floods trigged by a heavy storms raged through several northern localities over the last three days have left 23 dead and missing, along with property losses estimated at more than VND1 trillion (US$45.8 million).

Over 3,000 households together with schools and medical clinics were left in over two metres under water. Many roads were flooded and the National Highway 18 linking Dong Trieu to Mong Duong in Cam Pha City were a few metres under water.

Serious erosion happened at dozens of places, spreading 4,500m3 of earth and stones across roads. Barriers along a 400m stretch of road near Van Don 3 Bridge broke down, allowing 2,000m3 of soil and stones to pour into the route.

Hundreds of houses in Cam Pha Township suffered landslide as slagheaps from nearby mines shifted.

Several households in Cam Pha City’s Mong Duong Ward need to evacate on the afternoon of July 26. They received support from local authorities to move their belongings to safer locations.
