The Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand is trying to ensure Vietnamese fishermen detained in Thailand are treated in accordance with local and international laws, said Ambassador Nguyen Tat Thanh on March 28.

Earlier, Thailand’s press reported that 38 Vietnamese fishermen on seven vessels have been arrested for illegal fishing off KohKra, an island 30 nautical miles from the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat province and then were taken to Songkhla police.

The Ambassador revealed that the Embassy immediately set up a hotline with the management board of the prison in Songkhla province, through which they keep contact with the prison and the detained fishermen.

On March 28 afternoon, the embassy sent its officials to the prison to meet all the fishermen, he said.

The same day, the fishermen were handed over to the court for trial, and the judgment will be issued soon.
