Debris from CASA 212 plane retrieved

The first pieces of the CASA 212 plane which crashed on Thursday off the northern port city of Haiphong have been retrieved.

Vietnam Television quoted a coastguard saying that they have found some pieces which were believed to be parts of the CASA 212 jet including tyre and fragments of the frame.




ID cards and other belongings of the crew have also been found.

According to the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, China has also deployed a vessel to help with rescue work since 6 am this morning.

Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung has also arrived at the command post set up in Haiphong to direct the rescue work.

The CASA C212 plane carrying nine people crashed 44 nautical miles South-West of Bach Long Vi Island at 12.30 on June 16 while searching for the co-pilot of the missing Su-30MK2 fighter jet.

Vietnamese and Chinese rescuers are still making all efforts to look for the plane which they believe is some 30-metres under water.
