PM approves VND260 billion support for flood-hit provinces

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved a VND260 billion (USD12.38 million) package to support 12 provinces which have been affected by the recent flooding and storms.

According to the Government Office, the assistance will be provided to Thai Binh, Ha Nam, Dien Bien, Hung Yen, Thanh Hoa, Son La, Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh, Ha Giang and Lao Cai and Haiphong city to help them to deal with consequences of Storm Mirinae in July and flooding after Storm Nida in early August this year.

Of the sum, VND50 billion will be advanced to Nam Dinh, Thai Binh and Hung Yen provinces for repairing irrigation systems and settling crop and poultry losses first.

The people's committee of these provinces have been asked to use the central state budget as well as other sources the localities have to help local people affected by the natural disasters.

The Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control reported that Storm Mirinae caused three people and left 21 people injured, and damaged 24,700 houses.

Mirinae also sank 67 fishing boats and knocked down 17,000 electricity pylons, the report said. Meanwhile, nearly 61,000 hectares of vegetables and more than 38,000 hectares of orchards were damaged.

Storm Nida left five dead and brought about huge losses for many localities.
