A Hanoi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus had it door broken after colliding with a car Wednesday morning.

A Hanoi BRT bus had it door broken after colliding with a car on January 4.

According to the driver, Nguyen Xuan Thinh, the collision occurred on Giang Vo District at around 7.30 am at the junction of Giang Vo and De La Thanh when a car tried to pass the bus on the BRT lane and crashed into the bus's front door.

"I stopped the bus and got out to call the car's driver but she sped up and drove away," Thinh told Dan Tri/DTiNews on Wednesday afternoon.

"A large part of the door was broken," Thinh said. "There were some 70 passengers on the bus at that time and luckily nobody was hurt."

Director of Hanoi BRT, Nguyen Thuy, said that they are co-operating with Hanoi police to find the driver who would be held responsible in this accident.

The first BRT route began official operation on December 31 in Hanoi with an aim to reduce the number of private vehicles and ease congestion in the capital.

However there are doubts that BRT buses can be faster than normal buses due to the city’s narrow roads. The first 20 BRT buses running on a 14.7 kilometre route from Kim Ma Bus Station in Ba Dinh District to Yen Nghia Station in Ha Dong District have to share its separate bus lane with other vehicles and are unable to move fast during rush hours.
